Edo Governor, Mr Monday Okpebholo, and the Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, have expressed outrage over the deplorable condition of federal roads in Edo State, describing the plight of motorists as tragic and unacceptable.

The two leaders made the remarks during an inspection of the Benin–Warri dual carriageway bypass, where they witnessed first-hand the suffering of commuters and the rising toll of accidents caused by the road collapse.

Minister Umahi declared that no motorist could travel 100 kilometres on federal highways nationwide without facing major challenges.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited a deeply overwhelming infrastructure crisis but had already demonstrated commitment to reversing decades of neglect.

“President Tinubu met an overwhelming situation in terms of roads and bridges, but his priority is to deliver durable roads that can stand the test of time,” Umahi stressed.

Governor Okpebholo also commended the minister for swiftly responding to Edo’s infrastructural distress, recalling his own recent inspection where he was disturbed by scenes of multiple accidents and stranded motorists.

He warned that functional road networks were not just vital for the welfare of citizens but also tied to the ruling party’s credibility.

“The suffering of our people on these roads is unacceptable. Fixing them is a duty, not a favour,” the governor said.

The inspection visit marks part of the Federal Government’s wider push to stabilise Nigeria’s collapsing road network, which continues to cripple trade, mobility, and safety across the country.
