The Edo State Police Command has arrested several of its officers for allegedly vandalizing a vehicle during a recent protest by youths suspected to be internet fraudsters in Benin City.
The Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrest to journalists on Wednesday, stating that the affected officers belong to the Quick Response Team.
According to him, the officers were captured in a viral video behaving unprofessionally by smashing a parked vehicle at the scene of the unrest.

Yamu revealed that the incident followed an earlier attack on members of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on May 20, 2025, at Okhuimwun Community, when protesting youths reportedly ambushed the operatives while they were in transit from Lagos through Edo State. The ambush left the IRT officers with severe injuries and their vehicle damaged.
He said a reinforcement team was dispatched to rescue the injured personnel and apprehend those responsible for the attack. However, during the rescue operation, some officers were filmed engaging in misconduct by damaging a civilian vehicle.
“While the Command strongly condemns the attack on IRT personnel, it equally views the conduct of the officers during the rescue operation as highly unprofessional,” Yamu stated. He added that those involved have been arrested and are currently facing disciplinary measures in accordance with police regulations.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, called for mutual accountability between law enforcement and the public. He reassured residents of the Command’s dedication to upholding professional standards and delivering policing services in line with global best practices.
