Reports of financial mismanagement, abuse of office, and lawlessness at secretariats highlight governance crisis.
Edo State’s local government system was thrown into turmoil on Monday, September 22, 2025, as acting chairmen across the state’s 18 local government areas were either impeached or forced to resign following the induction of newly elected councillors.
The crisis followed the presentation of Certificates of Return to 63 councillors by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), marking the official assumption of office by officials elected in by-elections held the previous Saturday.

In Esan West, acting chairman Godsent Agboibo resigned voluntarily to avoid impeachment, citing ongoing developments as the reason. In Estako East, councillors signed an impeachment notice against acting chairman Solomon Ogumah, with reports indicating thugs took control of the local government secretariat in Okpella.
In Uhunmwode, nine councillors formally removed acting chairman Osas Iradia Benjamin, citing abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and disobedience to authorities as grounds for dismissal.
Party members have warned that the rapid removal of acting chairmen could trigger instability within Edo State’s APC, urging careful management to prevent further disruption at the grassroots level.
The upheaval underscores ongoing challenges in local governance, including accountability, transparency, and enforcement of administrative discipline at the municipal level.
