The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has launched a fresh attempt to arrest former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, over alleged involvement in N80.2 billion fraud.
EFCC operatives have reportedly besieged the Kogi Government Lodge in Abuja, sparking confusion and concern.
Bello’s media team claims he voluntarily presented himself for questioning but was not interrogated, raising questions about the EFCC’s intentions.
“We want to place it on record that the EFCC should be held accountable if anything untoward happens to him,” said Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office. “Tonight’s attack was needless as the former Governor made himself available to the EFCC in their office for interrogation.

The EFCC had no question to ask Alh. Yahaya Bello in the morning, but suddenly, they are out to arrest him. This action is condemnable. They have displayed the very reason many Nigerians believe they were fighting political battles instead of the mandate to fight corruption. This action reflects much more than the fight against corruption.”
The EFCC has filed 19 criminal counts against Bello, alleging money laundering and other financial crimes. The agency’s move to arrest Bello has been described as “gestapo-like” and “condemnable” by his media team, who argue that the EFCC is fighting political battles instead of focusing on corruption.
