The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pledged to thoroughly investigate former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, amid serious allegations of corruption, including the misappropriation of over N70 billion during his tenure.

This commitment was made by EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, where he addressed a gathering of protesters on Monday.

The EFCC’s scrutiny of Matawalle has been ongoing since May 2023, with claims of fraudulent contract awards and significant financial misconduct surfacing during his administration.

“The EFCC will do everything within its power to investigate every act of economic and financial crime,” Oyewale stated. He acknowledged the right of Nigerians to peaceful protests and assured that the commission would relay the protesters’ concerns to its Executive Chairman.

The protests, organized by the APC Akida Forum, centered on the urgency of action against Matawalle, who currently holds the position of Minister of State for Defense. Mallam Musa Mahmud, representing the group, expressed dissatisfaction over the perceived inaction against Matawalle, especially following the EFCC’s recent arrest of former Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku for similar allegations.

Mahmud emphasized the necessity for transparency in investigating Matawalle’s claims regarding his financial records. “We are confident that the EFCC has access to all facts regarding financial crimes in the country.

However, we urge the EFCC to clarify the total funds that the Zamfara State Government received between 2019 and 2023,” he said.

This call for accountability comes after Matawalle publicly claimed he did not receive anything close to N70 billion during his administration.
