A major political storm is brewing in Kaduna State as former governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused the current administration of paying ₦1 billion to bandits.

According to El-Rufai:
“One billion naira was paid to bandits by the current Kaduna government. They are paying bandits and apologizing to them. If the governor or anyone disagrees, let them come out and deny it — we have the evidence and proof.”
The comment has sparked immediate reactions, especially given Kaduna’s long-running security challenges, including killings, mass abductions, and attacks on schools and highways. Security experts warn that if El-Rufai’s claim is proven true, it could seriously undermine the credibility of the government’s security framework.
A Serious Claim in a Troubled Security Landscape
Kaduna remains one of Nigeria’s most volatile states. El-Rufai’s allegation directly questions the moral, strategic, and legal foundations of the current administration’s approach to combating crime. Although he did not present the promised evidence, his statement suggests that ransom payments and appeasement may be part of an unofficial security tactic.
Analysts note that such payments—whether by individuals or authorities—often strengthen criminal networks, enabling them to recruit, arm, and expand operations.

Political Fallout Expected
El-Rufai’s accusation is expected to provoke strong responses from government officials and political figures. The state government may face pressure to issue a formal rebuttal or explanation, particularly since the claim involves public funds and national security risks.
Observers say the development may widen the existing rift between El-Rufai and the current administration, potentially escalating into a prolonged political confrontation.
Public Reaction and Growing Demands for Accountability
Social media reactions show intense public anger and questions surrounding the state’s security spending. Many Nigerians are demanding:
- An official response from the Kaduna State Government
- A transparent investigation into the alleged ₦1bn payment
- Clarity on the government’s security strategy
- A broader probe into state–bandit negotiations
