Former Kaduna Central senator and human rights advocate Shehu Sani has stated that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has never truly fought for democracy.

Speaking on TVC’s Politics Tonight on Tuesday, Sani emphasised that El-Rufai “has never been in a cell” and remained largely unknown until 1999, when he was appointed Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).

“For people like Nasir, when they find themselves in office, they don’t know what democracy is about because they didn’t fight for it,” Sani said.

He contrasted his own experience with that of El-Rufai, recounting years of imprisonment and police harassment for his political activism.

“I have been through the rough times of my life. I have been through many prisons. I have been through many police stations. I wore prison uniform. I wore leg chain. I wore handcuffs as a political prisoner fighting for this democracy that is 25 years old,” Sani said.

The former lawmaker also described El-Rufai as “angry and frustrated” since leaving office in 2023, implying that the ex-governor’s recent political statements are coloured by personal grievances rather than democratic principles.
