Following his release, El-Rufai arrived at his Abuja residence, where he was welcomed by family members, close associates, and supporters.
Sources say he has since begun receiving condolence visits from friends, political allies, and sympathizers mourning the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.
It was earlier reported that Hajiya Umma El-Rufai passed away in Cairo, Egypt, where she had been undergoing treatment for age-related health issues.
Confirmation of El-Rufai’s release earlier surfaced in a now-deleted post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) by his son, Bashir El-Rufai.
In the post, Bashir claimed his father was being released from what he described as “unlawful and illegal detention.”
“My beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he wrote.
He also thanked supporters who had shown solidarity with the family during the period of detention.
According to reports, the ICPC granted the former governor temporary release on compassionate grounds, allowing him to participate in the burial rites of his late mother.
El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misappropriation during his administration as Kaduna State governor between 2015 and 2023.
The anti-corruption agency has yet to release a detailed official statement regarding the terms of his temporary bail or the next steps in the investigation.
