The National Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering an acceptable and comprehensive Electoral Reform Bill designed to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system and restore public confidence in elections.

The Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Mr Akintunde Rotimi, said lawmakers were finalising the harmonisation of inputs from stakeholders to ensure the timely passage of the reform bill. Rotimi, who represents Ekiti North Federal Constituency I, spoke on Saturday in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

He made the remarks while inaugurating three constituency projects, including two road projects in Isaba and Oke-Ayedun communities and a staff quarters at Odo-Oro High School, Odo-Oro Ekiti.
According to Rotimi, the proposed electoral reforms remain a priority for the National Assembly, adding that the delay experienced so far was due to extensive consultations aimed at producing an all-inclusive and effective framework.

He said the bill was targeted at guaranteeing free and fair elections, improving transparency and ensuring that votes truly count, while addressing shortcomings observed during the 2023 general elections.

Rotimi explained that the reform process involved joint engagements between the House of Representatives and the Senate, including retreats and consultations with community leaders, civil society organisations and other interest groups.

He disclosed that while the House of Representatives passed the bill before proceeding on recess in December, the Senate had since commenced its review, with both chambers currently harmonising outstanding areas.

The lawmaker stressed that credible elections remained fundamental to democratic governance, noting that citizens must be able to freely choose their representatives at all levels.

Highlighting his legislative contributions, Rotimi said he had sponsored over 40 bills, including those on independent candidacy, whistle-blower protection and the prevention of sexual harassment in educational institutions.

He also urged Nigerians to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying sustained public backing was necessary for the government to deliver on its reform agenda.

Meanwhile, concerns have continued to trail delays in the passage of the Electoral Reform Bill.

The African Democratic Congress Publicity Secretary, Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, recently called on the National Assembly to urgently conclude the process, warning that further delays could undermine preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Abdullahi cautioned that prolonged legislative delays could weaken efforts to curb electoral malpractice and erode public trust in the electoral system.
