Enugu State made a bold move into global sports tourism on Saturday by hosting the highly anticipated Enugu City International Marathon 2025.

Attracting elite athletes from across Africa, this historic event marked the state’s commitment to boosting sports tourism and economic development.

Governor Peter Mbah, an active participant, finished the 10km race in a respectable 45 minutes, showing his dedication to both the sport and the growth of Enugu as a key sports hub.

East African Runners Dominate the 42km Race at the Enugu City International Marathon 2025

In the headline 42km race of the Enugu City International Marathon 2025, East African athletes took center stage.

Kenyan runner Ken Kopos clinched the top prize, finishing in 2:22:32 and taking home $15,000.

He was closely followed by fellow Kenyans Steve Baswey and Bernard Sang, who finished second and third, earning $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Women’s Elite Results: Kenyan Runners Shine Again

East African dominance continued in the women’s elite division, with Shaoline Chepriroi of Kenya claiming first place with a time of 2:44:37.

Ethiopian runner Tilahu Birul secured second place at 2:45:10, while Kenya’s Rita Busiengy finished third with a time of 2:47:17, earning $10,000 and $5,000.

Nigerian Athletes Impress at Enugu City International Marathon 2025

Nigerian runners also showcased impressive performances at the Enugu City International Marathon 2025.

Blessing Shambo emerged as Nigeria’s fastest female runner, finishing fourth overall in the women’s elite race with a time of 2:48:04. She earned ₦1 million.

On the men’s side, Davou Gyang led the local contingent, finishing with a time of 2:29:03, securing ₦1 million.

Governor Mbah’s Vision for Enugu City International Marathon 2025 and Beyond

Governor Mbah, speaking after the event, emphasized Enugu’s ambition to make the Enugu City International Marathon 2025 an annual global fixture.

He shared his goal of turning the marathon into a major event on the World Athletics calendar, attracting athletes from all corners of the globe.

Key individuals played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the Enugu City International Marathon 2025.

Among them were Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, and Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, both of whom were instrumental in organizing the event.
