Speaking on Friday ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Manchester United, Maresca revealed his 75-year-old father has worked as a fisherman for 50 years, rising at 2am and finishing at 10am every day.
“My father is 75 years old, and for 50 years he has been a fisherman working from two o’clock in the morning until 10 o’clock in the morning,” – he said.
“This is sad in life. Not here the way (Sterling and Disasi) work.” – he added.
However, Maresca said his father’s routine shows a level of dedication he expects from everyone at the club.
The former Leicester City manager has kept Sterling and Disasi out of first-team training after they failed to secure moves in the summer window, and both now train alone.
Meanwhile, Sterling, who spent last season on loan at Arsenal, and Disasi, loaned to Aston Villa, did not impress enough to earn permanent moves.
Enzo Maresca pointed to those outcomes as part of his reasoning for the exclusion.
The England forward is one of the club’s highest earners, reportedly on a weekly wage of £325,000, and Maresca suggested paycheques cannot replace daily effort.
As a result, the manager has been clear: squad standards matter, and he will not compromise them.
Enzo Maresca has said there is nothing he can do to force a return to collective training while the situation remains unresolved, leaving Chelsea to prepare for Saturday’s fixture without two experienced players.
Chelsea travel to Old Trafford in search of points and clarity.
As fans and analysts keep a close eye on Enzo Maresca’s status, the story intensifies a tense week at Stamford Bridge.
