Company says low power supply hurting revenue and bill payment compliance
The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has blamed the persistent epileptic power supply in its franchise areas on a sharp decline in electricity generation from Nigeria’s national grid.
Chief Commercial Officer of the company, Ogunleye Akinleye, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Benin City, noting that power generation on the national grid has dropped to about 3,940 megawatts.

According to him, the decline in generation has significantly reduced electricity supply across the country, including states under BEDC’s operational coverage.

He explained that the situation is negatively affecting the company’s electricity distribution, customer satisfaction, and revenue collection.
Akinleye added that the shortage of power supply has weakened customers’ willingness to pay electricity bills, leading to declining revenue.
He said post-paid collections have dropped, while prepaid energy vending has also reduced due to limited electricity available for distribution.
The BEDC official further noted that the situation has made it difficult for the company to meet its market obligations and fully fund its operational expenditure.
He, however, appealed to customers in Edo State, Delta State, Ondo State, and Ekiti State to remain patient while the Federal Government of Nigeria and other stakeholders work to resolve the power generation challenges affecting the national grid.
