A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced senior government figure Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison on charges of embezzlement, just months after he made headlines worldwide following the leak of sex tapes involving wives of other officials.

According to Hilario Mitogo, press director of the country’s supreme court, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of “diverting money claimed as professional travel expenses for personal use.” He confirmed this to reporters in a WhatsApp message.

Engonga, who was once the head of the national financial investigation agency, stood trial alongside five other senior officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in travel-related expenses in the oil-rich nation.

The married official, popularly nicknamed “Bello,” gained notoriety in November when sex tapes — some reportedly filmed inside his finance ministry office — surfaced online while he was already in detention over the embezzlement case.

The scandal sparked a wave of mockery on social media, with parodies, songs, dances, and even a spoof virility drug jokingly dubbed “Balthazariem.”

Mitogo added that the provincial court also imposed a fine of $220,000 on Engonga in addition to the prison sentence.
