A 39-year-old inmate, Kabiru Oyedun, who escaped from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State, has been rearrested by officers of the Lagos State Police Command.
Oyedun, one of the fugitives who broke free through a damaged section of the prison’s perimeter wall, was located and apprehended in the Ayobo area of Lagos on Tuesday, May 21, 2025, around 5:30 p.m.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest, crediting it to strategic surveillance and intelligence-led operations carried out by officers from the Ayobo Division.

“Kabiru Oyedun was trailed and arrested in Ayobo on May 21, 2025, at about 5:30 pm by operatives of the Command attached to Ayobo Division. This is largely due to the proactive and preventive measures put in place by the Lagos State Police Command to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the state,” Hundeyin stated.
Police sources indicated that Oyedun will be returned to the Nigerian Correctional Service for transfer back to Osun State, where he had originally been incarcerated.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) had earlier confirmed that several inmates escaped the Ilesa Medium Security Custodial Centre following a structural breach caused by heavy rainfall. In response, the agency launched a full-scale manhunt for the escapees.
To aid in their recapture, the NCoS announced a N5 million reward for any credible information leading to the arrest of any of the fugitives.
“To encourage public participation, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the general public that a reward of N5 million is being offered to anyone who provides useful information that leads to the recapture of the fleeing inmates from the Medium Custodial Centre, Ilesha, Osun State,” the agency stated.
