Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala warned that Europe was one step away from war.

The prime minister condemned Russia’s recognition of separatist areas in eastern Ukraine as an “act of aggression against a sovereign state” in a speech to parliament in Prague.

The liberal-conservative politician advocated for EU sanctions, which would have severe ramifications for Russia.

He called the West’s failure to act forcefully enough in the aftermath of Russia’s annexation of the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014 a mistake.

Anyone who believes Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to resurrect the Soviet Union will end with eastern Ukraine is mistaken, according to Fiala.

He stated that the Czech Republic is prepared to participate in NATO’s eastern flank reinforcement, including chemical weapons specialists.

“At the same time, the Czech Republic is preparing for possible crisis scenarios such as a loss of Russian energy supplies or a wave of Ukrainian refugees,” he said.
