Residents of Lekki, Lagos State, may be unknowingly consuming contaminated water through their boreholes, according to a warning issued by Mahmood Adegbite, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum, Adegbite pointed to persistent flooding, poor waste disposal practices, and the absence of proper wastewater treatment as major contributors to water contamination in the area.

“Yesterday it rained heavily, which is unusual because this is supposed to be August break. However, we started having it because of a lot of complex issues,” he explained, highlighting the abnormal rainfall patterns and worsening drainage challenges.
He stressed that despite significant government investments, the drainage and wastewater situation still needs urgent attention.
“In terms of flooding, despite the fact that we have committed so much, however, we still need a lot to do in that space,” he said.
Adegbite issued a blunt warning to residents relying on borehole water: “Presently also, on wastewater treatment, I will say that everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘sht water’.”
He assured stakeholders that the government is working on solutions to tackle the wastewater crisis. According to him, the successful implementation of these plans would significantly reduce public health risks.
“However, if we are able to treat all the wastewater within this axis, which we have plans for, we should be able to also eradicate any form of disease that might result as a result of non-treatment of our waste,” Adegbite stated.
The statement comes amid growing concerns about infrastructure gaps in fast-developing parts of Lagos, particularly areas like Lekki that face environmental strain from rapid urbanisation and population growth.
