Former Angola’s president, Jose Eduardo Dos Santos has reportedly died at age 79.

According to reports, the 79-year-old has been battling cardiac arrest.

He was receiving medical attention at the Teknon clinic in Barcelona, Spain, before his death.

The Luanda government, on Friday, confirmed Dos Santos’ demise on Facebook.

He said:
Great pain and consternation.”
(The government) presents its deepest feelings of sorrow to the bereaved family, a statesman of great historical stature.”

Dos Santos ruled the Portuguese-speaking, oil-rich state of Angola for 38 years before stepping down in September 2017.

Also, Dos Santos’ successor and Angola’s current President, Joao Lourenco, in tribute to the former’s departure, declared five days of national mourning
on Friday.

He then described the former leader as a “unique figure of the Angolan homeland, to which he dedicated himself from a very early age.”
