An explosion on Wednesday rocked the Special Education Facility of the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
Daily Report Nigeria reports that the incident, with its cause yet to be ascertained, recorded no casualties.
Nonetheless, UNICAL authorities immediately ordered the evacuation of its students and staff members.
In a statement acknowledging the explosion, the institution’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe said that Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Obi also ordered the immediate closure of the library.

The statement read in part:
“The decision to shut down the building is with immediate effect. The University librarian and chief security officer are to jointly ensure urgent and total evacuation of staff, students and properties out of the building as well as enforce the sealing of the structure.”
Checks revealed the management of the university had previously declared a state of emergency for the same building.
Students were also instructed to stay away from the facility till further notice.
