On Tuesday, multiple explosions were reported at the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria’s (SPDC) gas processing plant in Gbarain, Bayelsa’s Yenagoa Local Government Area.
The plant supplies the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) export terminal in Rivers’ Bonny Island.
According to a community source, the explosion happened on a gas plant pipeline.
One Jessie David stated that the explosion was caused by suspected vandals attacking a pipeline, which resulted in explosions and a massive smoke and gas release.

David explained that the plant’s operator was notified, and the line was isolated, which reduced the pressure.
The SPDC spokesman Michael Adande, revealed that the incident occurred near the facility, and the cause is still unknown.
Adande said:
“We are actively monitoring reports of smoke detected near our Gbarain Central Processing Facility in Bayelsa State.
“While the source appears to be external to our facility, we are in close communication with regulatory authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the surrounding communities.”
