Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has deactivated the account of Nigerian human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore.

The account, which previously bore the handle @YeleSowore, is no longer accessible on the platform, a development that follows Sowore’s recent verbal attacks on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Although the reason behind the deactivation remains unclear, the move has sparked concerns among Sowore’s followers, some of whom are already calling on Facebook to reinstate the account.

One of his supporters, Emmanuel Larry, has written an open appeal to the platform, urging it to reverse the decision and warning of potential consequences.

In his letter titled “Urgent Request for Account Reinstatement of Omoyele Sowore,” Larry wrote:

“Dear Facebook Support Team,

I am reaching out to urgently request the immediate restoration of the Facebook account of Omoyele Sowore (@YeleSowore), a prominent Nigerian human rights advocate, journalist, and political figure.

His account was recently deactivated without any clear justification or prior notice of violations. We are deeply troubled by the possibility that this action may stem from political bias or external pressures, particularly from those unsettled by his outspoken commitment to justice and democratic change.

As a global platform, Meta/Facebook has a duty to safeguard free speech, not stifle it. The deactivation of Mr. Sowore’s account raises concerns about politically driven motives, which erodes the platform’s integrity as an impartial space for discourse and activism.”

Larry concluded the appeal by listing three demands:
1. The prompt restoration of Omoyele Sowore’s Facebook account.
2. A clear and public explanation for the account’s deactivation.
3. A public assurance from Meta/Facebook to uphold political neutrality and protect the voices of human rights advocates.

He further warned:

“Suppressing an activist’s voice through account deactivation is tantamount to censorship. If this issue is not resolved promptly, we will pursue further action through legal, civic, and international channels.”

As of the time of this report, Meta has not released an official statement regarding the incident.

Ruggedman, Sunny Neji, Others Accused of PMAN Office Break-In, $130,000 Theft as New Details Surface

Fresh revelations have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Nigerian rapper Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, and four others—veteran musician Sunny Neji, Zakky Azzay, Boniface Itodo, and Raymond Lasisi—over their alleged involvement in a break-in at the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN) national secretariat in Lekki, Lagos.

The arrest, initially reported by SaharaReporters, stemmed from a formal petition submitted to both the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police by Pretty Okafor’s legal team. Okafor is the embattled National President of PMAN.
