Who Was Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo?

Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, born 5 September 1965 in Ofoni, Sagbama LGA of Bayelsa State, was a prominent Nigerian politician and public administrator. Until his death, he served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, a position he assumed in 2020 under Governor Douye Diri.

His Education

Ewhrudjakpo was widely regarded as one of the most academically accomplished political office holders in the Niger Delta. He held multiple tertiary qualifications, including:

Before becoming deputy governor, Ewhrudjakpo served in several key roles:

  • Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure under the Bayelsa State Government.
  • Senator representing Bayelsa West, where he contributed to legislative debates and oversight functions.
    He was also a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), known for his loyal stance even during periods of defections and internal party tension.

Circumstances of His Death

Ewhrudjakpo died on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at age 60, after collapsing while carrying out official duties in his office in Yenagoa around 1:30 p.m.
He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Despite efforts to stabilise him, medical personnel were unable to revive him. Hospital sources suggest a possible cardiac-related emergency.
