Farmer Arraigned for Stealing Yams Worth N80k

A 40-year-old man, Adetunji Sunday, has been summoned before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Friday, for allegedly stealing yams worth eighty thousand naira.

According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Irewole Jimoh, the defendant committed the offence on November 29, 2022, around 4:00 p.m. at the Federal Government Girls College, Ipetumodu.

Jimoh told the court that the defendant forcibly entered the farmland of one Olayinka Emmanuel to commit the crime.

The inspector added that the defendant stole tubers of yams, worth the said amount and the property of Olayinka Emmanuel.

Emmanuel’s offence contravened sections: 81,383 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to two-count charges of entering and stealing.

On the other hand, the Defence Counsel, Bukoye Fayomi, pleaded for the bail of the defendant in the most liberal terms, while promising that his client would not jump bail.

Magistrate O. T. Badmus granted the bail of the defendant in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like amount.

Badmus said that the surety must swear to an affidavit of means, reside within the court’s jurisdiction, be gainfully employed with good character, with evidence of three years tax clearance certificate.

Additionally, he said that the surety must produce an identification card of gainfully employed and the address to be verified by the prosecutor.

The magistrate further ordered the remand of the defendant in Ile-Ife Nigeria Correctional Custody pending the perfection of the bail condition while the case was adjourned until January 1, 2023.
