Breaking Barriers and Setting Records
Held at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, this street-style track meet offered a unique and electric atmosphere.
Ofili not only won the women’s 150m event but also broke the previous world best of 16.23 seconds, set by Bahamian Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018.
With this victory, Ofili becomes only the second Nigerian athlete ever to hold a world record in athletics, joining Tobi Amusan, the reigning world champion in the 100m hurdles.
Ofili’s Calm Confidence and Technique
Ofili told NBC Sports’ Lewis Johnson after the race:
“Treat it like it is a long 100 meters. Drive more. The track is bouncy. Just let the track do the work,”.
Her calm yet confident remarks reflected the poise and preparation behind her explosive run.

Her performance is a testament to discipline, talent, and resilience.
Having missed out on a podium finish in the 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she placed sixth, Ofili appears driven by the desire for redemption in 2025.
A Season of Momentum
Ofili’s record-setting feat in Atlanta is not an isolated triumph.
Earlier in the season, she showcased her growing dominance at the Grand Slam Track Meet in Miami, where she ran a wind-aided 10.94 seconds in the 100m and posted a strong 22.27 seconds in the 200m behind Olympic champion Gabby Thomas and emerging talent Melissa Jefferson-Wooden.
Her consistent performances underscore her readiness for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, where she is expected to be a strong contender for a medal.
Atlanta: A Ground of Glory for Nigeria
Atlanta holds a special place in Nigerian sports history.
It was here that Chioma Ajunwa claimed Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medal in the women’s long jump at the 1996 Games.
That same year, Nigeria’s men’s football team made headlines by defeating Argentina to become the first Black nation to win Olympic gold in football.

Now, nearly three decades later, Ofili adds another golden chapter to Nigeria’s Atlanta legacy with her world-record run.
Other Standout Performances
Ofili was not the only Nigerian making waves in Atlanta.
Tobi Amusan, the 100m hurdles world champion, finished second in her heat with a time of 12.53 seconds, behind American Keni Harrison (12.44s).
Having previously clocked 12.74 and 12.66 seconds in Xiamen and Keqiao respectively, Amusan is clearly gathering momentum ahead of the summer championships.
Meanwhile, sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike ran a season-best 10.20 seconds in the men’s 100m heats and followed up with a 10.05-second finish in the final, placing second behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine (9.86s, wind-assisted).
His performance marks a strong comeback in his 2025 campaign.
The Rising Popularity of Street-Style Meets
The Adidas Atlanta City Games is part of a growing trend of street-style track events.
These meets, held outside traditional stadiums, aim to bring fans closer to the action and create an immersive experience.
Ofili’s record and the overall high-caliber performances at the event serve as proof of the format’s success.
