Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has stirred controversy after alleging that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received ₦50 billion from President Bola Tinubu following the deadly Ibadan explosion of January 2024.

Fayose made the allegation during an interview on TVC, where he claimed that the federal government released ₦50bn to support Oyo State in managing the aftermath of the Ibadan explosion but that the governor never disclosed it to the public.

The explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024, was traced to explosives illegally stored in a residential building at Aderinola Street, Ibadan. At least five people were killed, 78 injured, and over 300 residents affected, with dozens of homes, schools, religious centres, and businesses damaged.

Following the incident, Governor Makinde visited Aso Rock on January 22 and submitted an official report to President Tinubu.

Speaking on the matter, Fayose said the visit went beyond a routine briefing.

“Governor Makinde got ₦50 billion in support after the explosion in Ibadan. He never told Nigerians that,” Fayose alleged.

He insisted that the funds did not come from Oyo State’s treasury but were released through federal intervention.

“That money did not come from the coffers of Oyo State. It came from your interface with the President,” he said.

Fayose further accused Makinde of selectively disclosing details of his meeting with Tinubu, claiming the governor only spoke publicly about rejecting a request to help organise the APC in Oyo State, while keeping silent on the financial support.

When challenged to provide proof, Fayose maintained that he stood by his word

“I am not here to tell stories I cannot support. Government documents should not be flying around on television,” he said.

The allegation comes days after Makinde publicly revealed that President Tinubu had asked him to assist in organising the APC in Oyo State, a request he said he declined due to his loyalty to the PDP.

The ₦50bn claim has since fueled public debate, with Nigerians calling for official clarification on whether such funds were released and how they were utilised.
