The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the ongoing Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, describing the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and efficient.
Speaking to members of the INEC Press Corps after visiting several polling units across the Federal Capital Territory, Amupitan said the process met key standards of a credible election.

“You can see for yourself that the election is orderly. The election is also very efficient. The election is peaceful. And those are the instances of a good election,” he stated.
On the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), the INEC boss expressed confidence in the technology.
“As far as the efficiency of the BVAS is concerned, I am very satisfied, because the BVAS has worked effectively and efficiently. From what I gathered from the presiding officers, it takes less than five seconds to accredit a voter,” he said.
Amupitan also noted what he described as a large voter turnout, attributing it to growing public awareness about civic participation.
“There is a large turnout, which means people are becoming aware of the need to cast their votes. So far, the election is well organised and peaceful,” he added, while commending the presence of about 30 security personnel at one of the polling units visited.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, he assured Nigerians that the BVAS would continue to safeguard electoral integrity.
“The BVAS works very well. It will guarantee the integrity of the whole system. If you are not accredited, you can’t vote. Once you are accredited, you can cast your vote, and everything is working effectively,” he said.
On reports from other parts of the FCT, Amupitan disclosed that the situation remained calm across polling units, except for a minor incident in Abaji.
“The only area we had a problem was in Abaji, and immediately we deployed security, and the ugly incident was tamed. Voting has resumed,” he confirmed.
