Nigerian musician Madé Kuti has revealed that his legendary grandfather, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, died a poor man despite earning substantial money during his lifetime.
Speaking on the Tea With Tay podcast hosted by Taymesan, Madé opened up about Fela’s life and legacy, explaining that the Afrobeat pioneer’s financial struggles were largely due to his generosity.

“He was broke. Fela died poor,” Madé said.
“He had the kind of money that could have bought a whole street, but when he comes back from a show in Kalakuta, he will open a box of money and say anyone who needs it should take it. Anybody from the street could walk into Fela’s house. It was an open house policy, anybody could walk in and walk out at any time.”
Madé also shared an insight into Fela’s parenting style, noting that the music icon didn’t allow his children to address him as “Dad” or “Father.”
“His children were not allowed to call him ‘dad’ or ‘father’ because he didn’t want any preferential treatment for them. Everybody was equal in Kalakuta,” he added.
Fela Kuti, known for his radical politics, Afrobeat music, and communal lifestyle, passed away in 1997 at the age of 58.
