• Kano to get modern metropolitan rail network
• Project targets traffic congestion, urban mobility, economic growth
• State, FG to collaborate on transparent implementation
The Federal Government has approved a ₦1 trillion metropolitan rail project for Kano State, aimed at transforming urban transportation, easing traffic congestion, and stimulating economic activities across the state.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, disclosed this while addressing members of the state contingent that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the governor said the rail project would deliver a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system linking major districts within the ancient city.
“The project aims to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system, connecting key districts and enhancing mobility for residents,” the statement quoted Yusuf as saying.
According to the governor, the metro rail scheme is expected to ease persistent traffic congestion, improve residents’ quality of life, and position Kano as a strategic transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

Yusuf added that beyond transportation, the project would stimulate trade, attract investment, and deepen economic activities within the state.
“It is expected to stimulate trade and investment, improve quality of life, and position Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria,” he said.
The governor expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supportive policies, transparency, and close collaboration with federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation.
“The Kano State Government will work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure effective delivery and transparency,” the statement added.
The approval aligns with the Federal Government’s broader rail expansion agenda. In November 2025, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced plans to unveil a national railway development roadmap aimed at ensuring rail connectivity across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The NRC said the roadmap would allow states to access and utilise national rail corridors at no additional cost, strengthening Nigeria’s integrated transport infrastructure.
