FG Asked to Revoke East-West Road Contract | Daily Report Nigeria

During Tuesday’s plenary session, the House of Representatives issued a resounding call to the Federal Government to revoke the contract for the construction of the East-West road in Bayelsa State, citing its critical importance to the nation’s economy.

The motion, titled “Need to revoke the contract for the construction of flooded sections of the East-West road connecting major communities in Bayelsa State,” was spearheaded by Oboku Oforji, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency, Bayelsa State. Oforji emphasized the road’s pivotal role in enhancing economic and social development across major regions by facilitating trade, commerce, and cultural exchange.

Highlighting the current state of the road, Oforji pointed out that the contract awarded to Rock Result Nigeria Limited for the construction of box culverts on the flooded section (Kaiama-Ahoada Section) has not been adequately executed. This failure, according to him, has resulted in traffic disruptions and tragic loss of lives.

Despite a positive assessment by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, earlier in April 2024, Oforji expressed disappointment at the lack of progress since then. He raised concerns over the government’s prioritization of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road over the vital East-West road, which he deemed crucial for the nation’s economic sustainability.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Works to take immediate action to revoke the contract with Rock Result Nigeria Limited and re-award it to a more competent company capable of delivering the project effectively.
