The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a nationwide ban on the admission and transfer of students into Senior Secondary School Three (SS3), a move aimed at curbing examination malpractice and restoring credibility to the country’s education system.

The directive, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, applies to both public and private secondary schools across Nigeria and will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session.

Under the new policy, student admissions and transfers will only be permitted into SS1 and SS2, while entry into SS3 through any means has been completely prohibited.

Education officials explained that the decision was taken following growing concerns over last-minute student transfers, which are often used to secure unfair advantages during WAEC, NECO, and other national examinations.

“The ban is designed to stop the abuse of transfers into SS3, which has been linked to examination malpractice and the use of unauthorized centres,” a senior official at the Ministry of Education said.

Authorities noted that allowing students to suddenly appear in SS3 without proper academic tracking weakens assessment standards and undermines discipline within schools.

School owners, principals, and administrators have been warned that any violation of the policy will attract sanctions in line with existing education regulations.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to fairness, transparency, and quality education, stressing that the new rule will help rebuild public trust in Nigeria’s examination process.
