The Federal GovernmThe, FG has unveiled a new education policy aimed at lowering costs for parents, improving learning outcomes, and promoting sustainability through reusable textbooks.

The policy, announced by Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa and Minister of State Prof. Suiwaba Sai’d, prioritises durable textbooks designed to last four to six years and bans the bundling of disposable workbooks with textbooks.

Under the new framework, graduation ceremonies will be restricted to pupils completing Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3, easing financial burdens on families.

The policy also introduces a uniform academic calendar, limits the number of approved textbooks per subject, and requires substantive revisions rather than cosmetic updates.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will continue overseeing the quality assurance of instructional materials to ensure they align with the national curriculum, while the reforms aim to reduce waste, lower costs, and provide learners with high-quality teaching resources nationwide.
