The Federal Government has officially fixed 16 years as the minimum age for admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the policy on Tuesday during the 2025 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Policy Meeting held in Abuja.

Dr Alausa described the new age benchmark as “non-negotiable” and directed all tertiary institutions to comply fully. He stressed that any admissions carried out outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) would be considered invalid.

“The Federal Government will not hesitate to prosecute any institutional head found engaging in admission racketeering or bypassing CAPS,” Alausa warned.

The annual JAMB policy meeting sets guidelines for the conduct of admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions for the coming academic session.
