Maximum-penalty request: Prosecution says Kanu must be moved to prison pending execution of judgment.
The Federal Government has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death sentence on Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following Thursday’s ruling that found him guilty on all terrorism counts.
Arguing after the conviction was announced, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, told the court that the legal provisions under which Kanu was tried and convicted carry death sentence without any option, leaving the court with “no discretion” other than to impose the maximum penalty prescribed by law.

Awomolo maintained that Kanu had shown no remorse throughout the trial, describing his conduct in court as “militant, arrogant and unruly”. He further urged the court to order the forfeiture of all properties seized from Kanu to the Federal Government.

The senior lawyer also requested that Kanu be transferred to prison custody, insisting it is the only environment where his security can be fully guaranteed until the judgment is executed.
Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since 2021, was earlier convicted on multiple terrorism charges, including inciting broadcasts, operating an unlawful group, and acts deemed threatening to national security.
The court is expected to finalise sentencing after completing the remaining parts of the judgment.
