The Federal Government has launched an initiative to empower 37,000 women with Point of Sales (POS) machines, as part of its efforts to enhance grassroots development and combat poverty.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, made this known on Thursday, stating that the POS machines would be distributed through the Senior Special Assistants to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagements, representing the six geo-political zones of the country.

According to Kennedy-Ohanenye, the initiative aims to shift focus from advocacy and consultancy to empowering women, who constitute 70% of Nigeria’s population, including children. “Effective empowerment can lead to a better Nigeria,” she said.

The Minister emphasized the need for collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the SSAs on Community Engagements to ensure that funds allocated to women and children are utilized appropriately by donor and non-governmental organizations.

“The SSAs will serve as ‘foot soldiers’ to monitor progress in their respective communities,” Kennedy-Ohanenye said.
