The Federal Government began the enrolment of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members for the National Health Insurance Scheme on Friday (NHIS).

The insurance scheme, which is part of the Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Program, is designed to provide corps members with free access to quality health care.

“For effective implementation of this scheme, six (6) Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) have been carefully selected after a competitive process for each of the six geopolitical zones to drive the process,” said NYSC Director-General Major-General Shuaibu Ibrahim at the exercise’s flag-off in Abuja.

To ensure a smooth operation free of hiccups, corps members are expected to register as Health Care Practitioners in their respective areas.

As a result, I anticipate that both HMOs and Health Care Providers will approach this insurance scheme with the utmost responsibility and integrity.

“On our part, the NYSC Management will leave no stone unturned to ensure that all who have roles to play in this initiative do so with patriotic zeal in order to meet the expectations of the Government.”

To that end, I have directed the Corps Welfare and Health Services Department of the Scheme to ensure strict monitoring of the HMOs in collaboration with the NHIS Office in order to avoid service disruptions, He stated.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Mohammed Nasir Gambo, Executive Secretary of NHIS, described the initiative as a bold step in the right direction because it will significantly contribute to the well-being and welfare of youths, who, according to him, are the country’s future leaders.

Previously, Mr. Omotosho Folorunsho, NYSC Director, Corps Welfare and Health Services, explained that the initiative’s benefits package covers corps members’ pre-orientation, orientation, primary assignment, and terminal leave periods during their service year.
