The Federal Government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is set to launch a significant $750 million World Bank-funded project aimed at providing electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians.

REA’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, announced the initiative during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

The project, titled the Distributed Renewable Energy Scaleup, is designed to enhance electricity access in rural areas by utilizing renewable energy sources. Slated to commence in November, it is regarded as one of the most ambitious electrification efforts globally.

Aliyu stated, “This project targets electrifying 17.5 million Nigerians, and I must say that this is one of the most ambitious projects in the world.”

The Distributed Renewable Energy Scaleup project aims to provide a sustainable energy solution for rural communities, significantly reducing the reliance on traditional power grids and promoting cleaner energy alternatives.

In addition to this rural electrification project, Aliyu indicated that the REA plans to introduce cost-effective renewable energy solutions to tertiary institutions across Nigeria, further enhancing the country’s energy landscape.
