The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, launched the initiative in Abuja on Thursday, stating that the development is part of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to ensure Nigerians do not go to bed hungry.

According to Kyari, “This food intervention can be said to be timely considering the times and challenges we are in as citizens of this great nation. It is my pleasure to welcome you all to this historical, all-important and long-awaited inauguration of the sales of 30,000MT of Federal Government milled rice to Nigerians at a subsidized rate of ₦40,000 per 50 kilogramme.”

The government has made available 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice for sale, which is expected to crash the price of the foodstuff. Buyers will be verified using their National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers to ensure transparency and prevent multiple purchases.

To purchase the subsidized rice, buyers will need to present their NIN, IPPIS, or other relevant identification at the point of sale. They will then pay electronically and receive a treasury receipt with a unique code number, which they will present at the collection point to receive their rice.
