• Abia launches digital farmer database to strengthen food value chain

The Federal Government, FG, under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has announced a strategic partnership with the Abia State Government.

The partnership is aimed at reducing food importation and stabilising prices through sustainable local production.

The initiative, according to the Ministry, is part of a broader national effort to harness Nigeria’s vast arable land for agricultural self-sufficiency and export growth.

Speaking during the 2025 World Food Day celebration in Umuahia, the Abia State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Aloysius Chibuzor Mba, said the government was scaling up investments in key staple crops such as cassava and maize to reduce dependency on imports.

He explained that “conflicts in farms, inflation in food prices, climate change crises, and poor infrastructure” remain the major factors hindering productivity and food security across the country.

In a Statement Signed by Officials

In a statement signed by Mr Aloysius Chibuzor Mba, he reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving value chains and strengthening the food supply system to stabilise market prices and improve nutrition.

He stressed that the collaboration with Abia and other partners would enhance access to quality seeds, promote digital monitoring of farm activities, and provide better storage systems to prevent post-harvest losses.

Abia’s Commitment to Farmers

Representing the State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, pledged that the administration would continue to improve the welfare of farmers through technology-driven agricultural reforms.

According to him, “Abia farmers are central to our development agenda. We will continue to create the right environment to make life better for them and every Abian.”

Also speaking at the event, the Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Cliff Agbaeze, disclosed that the State had established the Abia Agriculture Dynamic Database System, designed to digitally register all farmers, their farms, and related activities.

He said the system would support evidence-based policy implementation and allow the government to track productivity, boost nutrition, and shield farmers from climate-related shocks and post-harvest losses.
