The Federal Government has proposed a new minimum wage of N45,000, which has been rejected by organized labor during negotiations on Wednesday.
Federal Government’s proposal was made during a meeting of the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage, but the labor unions walked out in protest, describing the offer as “ridiculous”.
The government and the Organised Private Sector had proposed N48,000 and N54,000, respectively, which were deemed insufficient by the labor sector.
Recall that the labor unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), had demanded a minimum wage of N615,000 and given the government until May 31 to conclude negotiations.

Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, an NLC representative questioned the specifics of the N48,000 offer on Wednesday.
Ndubuaku pointed out the lack of clarity regarding whether the amount was intended for transport, food, clothing, housing, or other essentials.
He said:
“We asked whether the N45,000 is for transport, food, clothing, housing or for what. So we just told them that since they are not serious, we better just leave, so we stormed out of the place.”
FG’s offer was presented by the Permanent Secretary of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Office.
