• ECN says move will create jobs and boost energy transition efforts

Federal Government, FG, has struck a landmark deal with the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer, LONGi of China, to establish a production factory in the country as part of efforts to deepen local manufacturing and accelerate the energy transition drive.

According to the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), which facilitated the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, the partnership followed a follow-up visit by a Nigerian delegation to China, where both parties concluded discussions on implementation details.

Under the deal, LONGi will set up a 1,000-megawatt-capacity solar panel production plant in Nigeria to meet the country’s growing demand for renewable energy solutions and reduce dependence on imported components.

In a statement signed by the Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr Abdullahi Mustapha, the ECN said the deal represents a “significant milestone” in Nigeria’s renewable energy development and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda on energy sustainability.

Dr Mustapha explained that the Commission is currently implementing the Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme, which seeks to accelerate the deployment of solar mini-grids to public institutions across the country.

“The establishment of a solar panel production factory in Nigeria will not only boost the implementation of this intervention but also create thousands of jobs for local engineers, technicians, and suppliers,” the statement read.

Earlier Agreement Strengthened the Partnership

Recall that earlier in the year, the Federal Government, through the ECN, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LONGi of China to promote local production of solar panels. The latest agreement formalises that commitment and sets the stage for immediate groundwork to begin.

Boost for Local Content and Green Transition

The ECN maintained that the project would serve as a catalyst for Nigeria’s renewable energy industry, help stabilise power supply in rural areas, and enhance local content participation in the clean energy value chain.

The Director General reaffirmed that the project aligns with the global shift toward sustainable energy, positioning Nigeria as a future hub for solar technology manufacturing in Africa.
