The Federal Government of Nigeria is planning to build 100 social homes in each of the 774 local governments across the country for low-income and underprivileged citizens.

The initiative called the National Social Housing Programme aims to provide affordable and decent accommodation to those in need, according to Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa.

Dangiwa made the announcement during a visit by the National Association of Directors of Local Government Departments of Works, Housing, Transport, and Environment in Nigeria.

He explained that the government plans to work with local government departments to upgrade slums and renew urban areas in selected states across the country.

The program will involve providing infrastructure like roads, water, sanitation, and other amenities to communities that are not fit for human habitation by current standards.

He stressed that the ministry is committed to transforming communities into decent and livable places for people to live in.

The Minister said:

The Federal Government wants to build 100 decent and affordable accommodations in each of the 774 local government areas for low-income and underprivileged citizens under the National Social Housing Programme.

“We are upgrading communities deemed not fit for human habitation by all standards and transforming them into decent, liveable communities by providing infrastructure like roads, water, sanitation, and other amenities.”
