The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is set to be merged with the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, according to a report by The Nation.
The move is motivated by the ongoing plans to transfer functions of the NDDC to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.
The report states that the planned move of scrapping the NDDC is part of efforts by the Nigerian government to increase the pace and level of development in the Niger Delta region.
A highly placed official said the planned restructuring of the NDCC will see the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs assume the functions of the NDDC.
The official also stated that the delay in inaugurating a substantive NDDC board is occasioned by the planned restructuring.
While the scrapping of the NDDC or it’s merger with the MNDA was not part of the recommendations of forensic auditors, the Federal Government is said to have lost confidence in the ability of the commission to deliver on the mandate of developing oil bearing states.
The Presidency, the source said, was considering bringing the NDDC directly under the President’s supervision or transferring its functions to the ministry.
Daily Report Nigeria can recall that the delay in the constitution of the NDDC board has caused much bickering ong stakeholders in the Niger Delta.
