The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has revealed that the President Buhari-led administration is about to reduce its workforce.

The minister said the government is designing an exit package for all government workers that will be leaving the service.

According to Zainab, downsizing the number of government workers became imperative as a result of the huge amount regularly spent on recurrent expenditure annually.

She also said the government is preparing an “exit package” for those that will be affected.

“There is a special committee led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) that is working on the review of agencies with the view to collapsing them partly using the Oransanye report,” the minister said.

“At the end of it what we want to do is to reduce the size of government and also to reduce the size of personnel cost and part of it will be designing the exit packages that are realistic”.

She added that the merger of two or more government agencies would cause the workers to lose their jobs.

The agencies would be merged as the government is currently “revenue-challenged”.
