FG To Take Legal Action Against Newspaper Over Controversial LGBTQ Report | Daily Report Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledge to take legal actions against Daily Trust newspaper following a false report from a newspaper.

Daily Trust newspaper had, on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 published an article stating that the government had entered into a $150 billion Samoa Deal, enforcing that loan recipients must enforce LGBTQ rights within their jurisdictions.

This quickly took a drastic turn as a lot of people, including religious leaders, and politicians criticizing it, and saying it goes against all Nigerian culture, and even the law.

Reacting to this, the Federal Government denied the allegations, stating that the Samoa agreement focuses solely on enhancing the nation’s economic development and does not include provisions related to same-sex marriage.

Speaking ok the controversial news, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris said as much as the government values freedom of speech, it will pursue legal actions against the news, which is tagged as ‘misinformation’

While respecting the freedom of speech and expression of all citizens and the fourth estate, the FG will make an official report against @daily_trust to the Newspapers Proprietors of Nigeria and use the court to seek redress against the misinformation and fake news of @daily_trust”, the minister said.
