  • Accuses ex-candidate of fuelling ethnic division during campaign

  • Vows to focus on merit and unity ahead of 2027 elections

A faction of the Labour Party (LP) has declared that selecting Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election was a “costly mistake” that betrayed Nigeria’s quest for genuine transformation.

Speaking in Abeokuta, Abayomi Arabambi, the factional National Publicity Secretary of the party, said the LP sacrificed competence and national appeal by choosing Obi over Faduri Oluwadare Joseph, a professional nurse and political figure he described as disciplined, visionary, and truly pan-Nigerian.

“It was a betrayal of Nigeria’s genuine quest for transformation,” Arabambi stated.

He accused the party of prioritising popularity over character, claiming that Obi’s movement relied heavily on ethnic sentiment and deepened regional divisions across the country. “Perhaps the most damning indictment of Obi’s candidacy is the ethnic polarisation that shadowed his campaign,” he added.

Arabambi further criticised Obi’s silence on key national issues, including the activities of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He alleged that Obi expressed outrage selectively, depending on what suited his political agenda.
