Botafogo looked lively from the off. In the ninth minute, Jefferson Savarino broke through only to see his shot kept out by Jan Oblak.
Just before half-time, Julián Álvarez wasted a clear chance inside the six-yard box.
VAR then reviewed a challenge on Álvarez but ultimately penalized Alexander Sørloth for the earlier foul in the buildup, keeping the score at 0-0 at the break.
Simeone introduced Antoine Griezmann after the interval to sharpen Atletico’s attack.
Just after the hour, Sørloth narrowly missed a header, and Botafogo almost penalised the visitors on the counter when Igor Jesus forced another fine save from Oblak.
Finally, Griezmann fired home from close range 3 minutes before the full time.
Even at that, Atletico bowed out on goal difference.
Botafogo’s five-game winning run ended, but they still finished second in the group and will face the winners of Group A – likely Palmeiras in a potential all-Brazilian quarterfinal.
