FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023: Underscoring African Teams

As the prestigious Women’s World Cup 2023 approaches,  Daily Report Nigeria brings you essential information about the African representatives in the tournament.

South Africa, Nigeria, Morocco, and Zambia will proudly carry the continent’s flag in this edition, with Morocco and Zambia making their debut appearances.

Despite their talent and determination, no African team has advanced beyond the quarter-finals.

The Super Falcons made it to the last eight in the 1999 edition, and they aspire to go even further this time.

Let’s take a closer look at the fixtures for the African teams:

Nigeria

The Super Falcons will participate in the World Cup for the ninth time, making them the most experienced team from Africa.

They find themselves in Group B alongside Olympic champions Canada, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

Their campaign begins on Friday, July 21, at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, where they’ll face Canada.

Six days later, on July 27, they’ll take on Australia at the Brisbane Stadium.

Finally, on July 31, they’ll return to the Brisbane Stadium to play against the Republic of Ireland.

South Africa

Banyana Banyana will compete in the World Cup for the second time. Placed in Group G, they kick off their journey on July 23 at the Wellington Regional Stadium against the 2003 finalists Sweden.

Four days later, they’ll face Argentina at Dunedin Stadium, and on August 2, they’ll conclude their group matches at Wellington Stadium against Italy.

Morocco

Making their debut appearance, the Atlas Lionesses earned their spot by reaching the last four in the recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, losing to Banyana Banyana in the final.

In Group H, they face a challenging task. On July 24, they’ll take on two-time champions Germany at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

On July 30, their second match will be against Korea Republic at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide.

Their final assignment will be against Colombia at Perth Rectangular Stadium on August 3.

Zambia

Also making their first World Cup appearance, Zambia’s Copper Queens are in Group C, facing a tough challenge.

Their journey begins on July 22 at the Waikato Stadium against an opponent yet to be revealed.

Four days later, on July 26, they’ll play Spain at Eden Park.

Their final group match against Costa Rica will be at the Waikato Stadium on July 31.
