A massive fire on Wednesday engulfed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House located on Martins Street, Lagos Island, causing panic and prompting an extensive emergency response.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been established, noting that a full investigation would commence after firefighting and recovery operations are concluded.

He added that the number of casualties could not be immediately confirmed, as rescue and containment efforts were still ongoing at the time of reporting.

To prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building, six fire trucks and a skylift were deployed. Emergency responders faced significant challenges due to the height of the high-rise structure, which complicated access and firefighting operations.

Agencies involved in the operation included LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Red Cross, and LRU Paramedics. The LRU Fire Service was also activated to reinforce the response.

“Recovery operations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
