  • It was gathered that the victims were scooping fuel from the tanker before it exploded.

A petrol tanker explosion has claimed no fewer than 50 lives in Niger State.

It was gathered that a tanker loaded with fuel fell on a tarred road, leading to the explosion.

This happened along the Dikko-Maje Road in the Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday, January 18.

50 people confirmed dead following tanker explosion in Niger

Confirming the incident, the FRSC commander, Kumar Tsukwam said a total of 50 people have been confirmed dead, while many other sustained varying degrees of injuries.

He added that the tanker had fallen on the road, spilling it’s content on the road, and while residents struggled to scoop fuel, they ignored it’s dangers.

Tsukwam added that those scooping fuel got burnt, and the fire even affected people who went to rescue them.

He said,

“More than 50 people lost their lives in the tragic incident

 

Also confirming the incident, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arah said the accident occured while people were attempting to transfer the Premium Motor spirit to another tanker.

He added that the tanker came in contact with the generator used to facilitate the transfer.
