Nigerian singer Flavour, whose real name is Chinedu Okoli, has clarified his stance on the Afrobeats genre.
In a recent appearance on the ‘Afrobeats Podcast’ hosted by Shopsydoo, Flavour stated that he does not identify as an Afrobeats artist and is not concerned about not being credited for the genre’s global success. He emphasized that his work falls under African music rather than Afrobeats specifically.
Flavour expressed his frustration with the media’s focus on Afrobeats, saying it often overlooks other forms of African music. He noted that despite his significant contributions to African music, he is frequently left out of conversations that center on Afrobeats.

“I don’t mind not being credited for the rise of Afrobeats because I’m not an Afrobeats artist,” Flavour said. “What I do is African music, and there are other artists like Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platnumz who are also advancing African music but are not classified as Afrobeats artists.”
He urged the media to broaden their coverage to include all forms of African music and not just Afrobeats.
