Nigerian highlife singer Flavour, whose real name is Chinedu Okoli, has echoed Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton’s criticism of Afrobeats music.

Banton recently stirred controversy by calling Afrobeats “f*ckery” in an interview, claiming it lacks substance and will eventually fade away.

In a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Flavour agreed with Banton, stating that Afrobeats lacks depth because many artists in the genre are not putting in enough effort. He commented, “I understand what Buju Banton is saying. Today’s artists don’t want to put in the hard work; they just want to vibe. Maybe Buju is trying to wake us up.”

Flavour also clarified that he does not consider himself an Afrobeats artist but rather a highlife musician. He criticized the tendency of Western media to group all African artists under the Afrobeats label.
